BOX-OFFICE WEATHER
Who ever said that the film business is more unpredictable than the English weather has said it correctly. Coming from the Yash Chopra, Gulshan Rai and Salim-Javed camp we expected Deewaar to do roaring business. And so it did, it's producer has unabashedly called it Gold Mine. But did we expect Firoz Khan's superhit Dharmatma' to have a such a feeble response from the public? Inspite of a having the reputation of successful hit " Apradh " and two lucky heroine, this film just did not a attract a vast number of patrons. Though " Julie " was based on a malayalam hit we did not expect it do click in any big way. Afterall, the days of successful malayalam / Tamil / Telugu films being remade into successful Hindi films are almost over since the extraordinary response of year1967 biggest hit Tapi Chanakya's " Ram Aur Shyam ", what with " Aaina " , " Ek Gaon Ki Kahani ", " Shandar " etc. being roasted by public taste ! Even moviegoers were heard to say that "Julie " would be one more pale, imitation of " Bobby " and would hence be a box office fiasco. But helped by a powerful performances, haunting music and attractive visuals, this film is receiving blockbuster response from the nation. We had also thought the days of Raj Kapoor and Rajendra Kumar were almost over as an actor, but one more predictable thing that happened, Rajendra Kumar who flopped very badly in big box-office disasters like "Aman ", " Palki " , " Shatrang ", " Anjana " , " Gora Aur Kala ", " Aap Aaye Bahaar Aayee "," Tangewala " and " Gaon Hamara Shehar Tumhara " , has discovered a gold mine hit in " Do Jasoos ". Even " Sunehra Sansar " which is stale studio-oriented tear jerker has fared much better than the plenty of films in current times and is a modest hit at the box office.
Sunil Dutt, who staged a virtual resurrection with hattrick of hits " Heera ", " Pran Jaye Vachan Na Jaye " and " Geeta Mera Naam ", is once again having a rough time at the ticket windows. In " Himalaya Se Ooncha " he had plenty of personal stakes, And then the film came from the camp of very intelligent and shrewd filmmakers Prakash Mehra, who had made box office bonanza like " Zanjeer " , " Haseena Maan Jayegi ", " Haath Ki Safal " and " Samadhi ". And yet, what a thud it was ! Even " Umar Qaid " is not getting big response from the public though film is doing moderate business . We did not expect miracle from Goldie (Vijay Anand) in " Jaan Hazir Hai ". But no one expected the film to show such a disaster collections. Hrishikesh Mukherjee has been making consistently good films which do hit to above average box-office business. His fresh effort with Gulzar in a comedy, and this film " Chupke Chupke " is doing quite a excellent business. Shashi Kapoor is our most durable star, inspite of hits and flops, he still remains in the market and manages to hit in a big way now and then. His " Chori Mera Kaam " is a blockbuster affair. It has raised the stocks in market of Shashi Kapoor and Zeenat Aman and Brij, it's writer K.A Narayan now remains a top professional. Shashi Kapoor last few films like " Roti Kapda Aur Makaan " , " Chor Machaye Shor " and " Deewaar " have done roaring business at the box office and " Chori Mera Kaam " is another feather to his cap. Like Salim-Javed he too feels the public pulse correctly. Maybe his eoggs most his stories, but he blends them into his imagination in a clever way. Misfortune continues to bug both B.R Ishara and and K. A Abbas. The former had made that one flop with the talented artiste Rehana Sultana. The film is " Dil Ki Rahen ", it has mature performance by Rakesh Pandey and Rehana Sultana and lovely music by Madan Mohan. Even Rehana's mature film, " Prem Prabhat " flopped, Abbas flopped miserably in " Faslah ". But Shabana Azmi, the leading lady of Abbas flop film, came out with an enduring performance in " Parinay " . Considering it's budget, the film did satisfactory business. Sanjeev Kumar came up with a mature performance in " Aandhi " and the film did more than expected business. But the same concern's more ambitious project " Aakraman " is limping. Sanjeev sank also in " Apne Rang Hazaar " . But the director of " Apne Rang Hazaar " came out with one hit fim " Khel Khel Mein " . People used to call the Neetu-Rishi pair just one more flop pair in the tradition of Zeenat Dev Anand- but in this film they have scored a triumph. Khel Khel Mein has also restored the career of R.D Burman's image.
