INTERNATIONAL BOLLYWOOD BOX OFFICE
(Weekend Ending March 25, 2001)

1. CHORI CHORI CHUPKE CHUPKE
(Starring Salman Khan, Rani Mukherjee, Preity Zinta)

RATING:

****
*

Although the opening weekend for Chori Chori Chupke Chupke was bumper, collections started falling after midweek. Everyone was hoping that this love triangle would become the first all round Bollywood hit of 2001, but the drop in interest means it is only a hit in the Mumbai-Maharashtra , Uttar Pradesh and in South India. It is doing above average in other Indian territories. The movie has also done very well in the UK and US

POSITION LAST WEEK: 1
NUMBER OF WEEKS IN CHART: 5

2. MOHABBATEIN
(starring Shah Rukh, Amitabh Bachchan, Aishwarya)

RATING:

****
*

Mohabbatein continues to perform steadily at the box office and is doing better than the new releases that keep flopping left, right and centre. The Aditya Chopra movie has spent several months on the chart now, and has been loved by Bollywood fanatics. The love story is a world-wide blockbuster, breaking records in certain parts of India, as well as the UK and US.

POSITION LAST WEEK: 3
NUMBER OF WEEKS IN CHART: 24

3. CHHUPA RUSTAM
(starring Sanjay Kapoor, Manisha Koirala & Mamta Kulkarni)

RATING:

****
*

This week's new release, Chuppa Rustam, enters the chart at number three. The movie's opening weekend was mainly disappointing, although it managed to collect average collections in some cinemas. The fact is that the film took too long to make, has a dull star cast and soundtrack, and looks like a big loser at the box office. It has received limited distribution in the UK and US, meaning it isn't even showing in many cinemas.

POSITION LAST WEEK: NEW
NUMBER OF WEEKS IN CHART: NEW

4. OFFICER
(Starring Sunil Shetty and Raveena Tandon)

RATING:

****
*

Collections continue to fall for Officer, and the movie has become a flop. Sunil Shetty is finding it hard to deliver a hit in solo-hero projects, and the fact that critics tore this film apart did not help matters. It has not done well anywhere in India and is also a big flop in the UK and US.

POSITION LAST WEEK: 2
NUMBER OF WEEKS IN CHART: 4

5. KASOOR
(starring Aftab Shivdasani, Lisa Ray)

RATING:

****
*

The overall box office performance of Kasoor is average. The film has done decent business in areas such as Mumbai, Hyderabad and Delhi. Although it is a loser in other areas, it will recover costs because it was made on a fairly small budget, which is a good result for newcomers Aftab Shivdasani and the beautiful Lisa Ray. It has just about done average business overseas, in places such as the UK and US.

POSITION LAST WEEK: 4
NUMBER OF WEEKS IN CHART: 8

6. AASHIQ
(starring Bobby Deol, Karisma Kapoor)

RATING:

****
*

Another disappointment for 2001 is Aashiq, which joins the growing list of flop films so far this year. A lot was expected for this film, but it was unable to deliver the goods. This is bad news for director Indra Kumar, who really needs a hit film at the moment. It is also bad news for the Karisma Kapoor/ Bobby Deol pairing, which has been unable to produce a hit yet. It has done its best business in Uttar Pradesh, but is losing elsewhere.

POSITION LAST WEEK: 5
NUMBER OF WEEKS IN CHART: 9

7. KUCH KHATTI KUCH MEETHI
(starring Kajol, Sunil Shetty, Rishi Kapoor)

RATING:

****
*

KKKM has witnessed a further drop in collections this week, which only reinforces the fact that it is a flop. Although it's early days for the New Year, this movie can join the list of flops that is growing every week. The film has done particularly bad in the UK and US, although its India collections are nothing to write home about either. Kajol's market value is continuously going down and it will be Karan Johar's 'Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Ghum' that will save her.

POSITION LAST WEEK: 7
NUMBER OF WEEKS IN CHART: 10

8. HADH
(Jackie Shroff, Suman Ranganathan, Sharad Kapoor)

RATING:
****
*

Following hot on the heels of Grahan's release, here is another much delayed Jackie Shroff starrer. The film opened to an ice-cold response from the audience and collections continue to drop. It's a huge flop and has been removed from most cinemas.

POSITION LAST WEEK: 6
NUMBER OF WEEKS IN CHART: 14

9. GRAHAN
(starring Jackie Shroff, Manisha Koirala)

RATING:

****
*

Even though Grahan has a decent star cast, it was unable to even generate a decent opening weekend. The fact that it has been in the making for so long has definitely worked against it and the film is a total flop. Collections are dropping day and day in India, and Grahan has is not even being shown in many places in the UK and US, which means it is a huge waste of money.

POSITION LAST WEEK: 8
NUMBER OF WEEKS IN CHART: 5

10. ZUBEIDAA
(starring Karisma Kapoor, Manoj Bajpai and Rekha)

RATING:

****
*

There has been no improvement's in Zubediaa's collections this week, and director Shyam Benegal will have to be happy that his movie received a lot of critical acclaim instead. The film has not only benefited the director, but also the two actresses Karisma Kapoor and Rekha, who have been flooded with offers ever since Zubediaa released. The film has done better overseas then it did in India.

POSITION LAST WEEK: 9
NUMBER OF WEEKS IN CHART: 10
