Jaani Dushman , Suhaag , Sargam , Noorie and Mr. Natwarlal were the
largest box-office grossers of the year and the first three from the list did business of about 70 lacs to 80 lacs per major circuits according to the Trade Magazine, ' Film Information '. The year also witnessed unexpected major success stories as like of Dada , Nauker , Golmaal and Suraksha . The other films to rake in good moolah at the box-office were Khandaan , Kartavya , Daaku Aur Jawan , Ahinsa , Muqabala , Tarana , Amar Deep , Aatish and Baaton Baaton Mein.
Raj Kumar Kohli's Jaani Dushman , a horor film was banned. Dev Anand's Des Pardes under the pretext of pub scenes being unsuitable for viewing. Dev , unable to delay the release of his film accepted the ' A ' Certificate and suffered at the box-office. But Raj Kumar Kohli took matter to court and got the film out of the censor clutches and at the end Jaani Dushman turned out to be box-office horse and by far the biggest grosser of the year despite stiff competition from biggies like Manmohan Desai's Suhaag and Rakesh Kumar's Mr. Natwarlal. Another small film which was also victim of Censor board again Raj Kumar Kohli's Muqabala. One of the victims, Raj Kumar Kohli had s bitter words for the partiality so peculiar to te scissors wielders : When my film ' Muqabala ' was presented to them for viewing, they took week and week and at the end of it they all gave me an ' A ' Certificate. But , Mr. Natwarlsl which was put up on a Wednesday, was passed and given ' U ' Certificate by Friday , i.e. two days. Lahu Ke Do Rang, Bhayanak, Grihaparvesh and Ikarar also faced thr Censor Board and they accepted the verdict. Though Kailash refused but he hadn't succeed.
Amitabh Bachchan who had fantabulous year in 1978 with Kasme Vaade , Don , Trishul and Muqaddar Ka Sikandar, of which the last two were grand grossers and Muqaddar Ka Sikandar is rated next only to Sholay in trade generals in terms of gross collection but in 1979 , Amitabh had a mixed year with Suhaag and Mr. Natwarlal performing extremely well and Kaala Patthar , The Great Gambler and Jurmana being the most successive flops of the year. Dharmendra scored a hit in Kartavya . Rajesh Khanna finally made a successful comeback with Amar Deep after several flops since 1975. Jeetendra had two successive success : Khandaan and Aatish. Sunil Dutt, had a fabulous year with Jaani Dushman , Ahinsa , Muqabala and Daaku Aur Jawan performing very extremely well at the box-office. Vinod Khanna taste success in Daaku Aur Jawan. Sanjeev Kumar delivers two hits Jaani Dushman and Nauker to his credit. Shatrughan sells in Jaani Dushman and Muqabala. Shashi Kapoor had a superhit in forms of Suhag but his other ambitious starrers bombed.
